Do not use a universal tread-depth rule for every AWD system
Manufacturers use different AWD hardware and different limits for tire circumference or tread-depth variation. The owner's manual and service information for your exact vehicle take priority over a tire shop's generic rule of thumb.
The best replacement strategy depends on how closely the remaining tires match
A single replacement may be acceptable when size, construction, load and speed ratings, model, and measured tread depth stay within the vehicle maker's limit.
Some tire specialists can reduce a new tire's tread depth to more closely match the existing set. Confirm that this approach is acceptable for the vehicle and the tire warranty before ordering it.
Whether two tires are enough depends on the AWD system and allowable front-to-rear difference. Do not assume an axle pair automatically solves the mismatch.
Replacing all four can make more sense when tread is low, tire models are mixed, wear is uneven, or the measured difference would exceed the drivetrain specification.
Measure the existing set before you approve new tires
The useful question is not simply how old the tires are. It is how closely all four rolling tires match right now.
- Exact tire size on all four positions
- Brand and tire model on each wheel
- Load index and speed rating
- Tread depth measured at multiple points on each tire
- Any uneven shoulder or center wear
- Whether the damaged tire can be safely repaired instead of replaced
- The AWD tire-variation limit stated in the owner's manual or service information
- Whether the vehicle uses staggered front and rear tire sizes from the factory
Why the same sidewall size can still produce a mismatch
Two tires marked with the same nominal size can have slightly different actual circumference because of tread design, manufacturing tolerance, pressure, and wear. A brand-new tire also has more tread height than the same model after tens of thousands of miles.
An AWD system may interpret persistent wheel-speed differences as normal cornering, slip, or a condition that requires clutch or differential action. On systems that are sensitive to tire mismatch, making the drivetrain compensate continuously can create heat and wear that the manufacturer intends owners to avoid.
That does not mean every AWD vehicle needs four new tires whenever one tire is punctured. It means the decision should be based on measured remaining tread and the specification for that AWD system rather than a blanket rule.
A practical way to get a quote without buying more tire than you need
- 01Ask whether the damaged tire is repairable first
A tread-area puncture may qualify for a proper internal repair depending on location, size, tire condition, and manufacturer guidance. Sidewall or shoulder damage usually changes the decision.
- 02Get the remaining tread depths in writing
Ask the shop to measure all four positions rather than describing the other tires as simply good or worn.
- 03Check the vehicle-specific AWD limit
Use the owner's manual or manufacturer service guidance to compare the measured tires with the allowable difference.
- 04Compare one-tire, shaved-tire, pair, and full-set options only if they are allowed
Price each valid option, including tire age and remaining life, instead of defaulting to the cheapest or most expensive choice.

Keep tire pressures matched after the replacement too
Even a properly matched set can show different rolling behavior when one tire is significantly underinflated. Set cold pressures to the vehicle placard and recheck the repaired or replaced tire if the TPMS warning returns.
